Taking It Black

Day 3 of Paleo(after this weekends upset) and it's black coffee once again. I REALLY thought there might be tears and tantrums having to drink black coffee but I've made peace with it. You simply have to get quality coffee if you're drinking it black. Any Starbucks BURNED coffee can be doctored up with cream and sugar. When you drink it black you discover flaws in the flavor, the aroma lacks and its rather blah:(. Not so with this machine, today I'm indugling in Butter Toffee flavor and it's pretty damn incredible............................for black coffee.

Recently, A co-worker decided to buy a Keurig single serving coffee machine for the staff, we only have 14 people. OMG!!!! Amazing perfect yummy blends that taste great black. Eye opening for sure.

Paleo is going great this round. Energy is good today and I knocked out 35 min of sprint intervals in my fasted state. I typically do cardio/workouts before breakfast and have for years.I've been checking out a great new site called "The Label Says Paleo". It's a new blog started by a group of crossfitters in town, who are all taking the 30 day plunge...:)

Lots of fantastic recipes to be had so check it out!

Oh.....another reason why I'm moving next week; The vending machine was shattered to pieces when I arrived this morning. Glass all over the floor leading to the crime scene. This makes the 3rd break-in I have discovered while living here .Ghettofab baby! This is why I sleep next to my .38

Question~ Do you guys do your workouts in a fasted state of after food? Just curious.

Hey, Barbara!

If my workout is in the early a.m. (CrossFit women class at 5:45 or my heavy lifting day at the gym at 6:30), I don't eat before. Just drink a glass of water and go.

On the weekends when workouts tend to start around 8:30 or later, I usually eat the equivalent of a 1-block snack before I go: a piece of turkey sausage and half an apple and a few almonds... or half a Larabar and a hunk of grilled chicken... just something to take the edge off.

I always ALWAYS eat 2 blocks worth of carbs -- usually 1/2 a cup of sweet potatoes or some snap peas and half an apple -- within 45 minutes of finishing my workout.

That 60-minute window after workout is an important time to take in calories, especially dense carbs like sweet potato, butternut squash, etc.

I have 1/2 cup of carrot juice mixed with 1/2 cup of water before I leave the house for our 5:30 a.m. CrossFit class.

That's it.

By the way --- our office switched to Kueirg coffee makers 2 years ago. Nearly everyone I talk to in our office now has one at home, too.

I'm drinking "Gingerbread" this a.m. (black).

Thanks for the heads up on The Label Says Paleo. I had tremendous success with Paleo, but have fallen (hard) off the wagon. Time to get back up on it.

Hey, Robbie!

The Label Says Paleo is a great resource, and all of Melissa Urban's posts on the 30-day paleo clean-up are still available on her blog and here, in their new location:

Thanks for the shout out Barbara :)

When I work out early morning, I don't eat anything ahead of time. I drink water, and sometimes coffee. I used to drink Spark, but gave that up for the paleo challenge.

If my workouts are later, I make sure to eat around 3 hours before. Any closer to the workout and I will feel it.

This was a good question to ask- I think everyone has to play around with what works best for them, and then stick with that. I learned about my "3 hour rule" after a couple of instances of eating too close to a workout- I will not do that again!

I never do fasted workouts, ever.

One obvious answer to that is, why potentially burn muscle?

However the more obvious observation is, why do something lowers bloodsugar, when it's already low?

This has been noted in healthy people, that do fasted Cardio, and end up having dizzy spells and people failing to be able to finish workouts.

Many people on a lot of messageboards, will probably tell you fasted is an unneccessary way to condition yourself.

So my personal opinion is, if you're considering it don't.

Take care and best wishes.

Well I guess I'm the lone ranger on this one. Since I get up at 4:45AM to workout I don't eat. I'm not hungry, my workouts don't suffer for it and I don't get shaky, etc...

There are so many conflicting reports on whether to eat or not eat.

Now, I do eat when I get home. By then, I'm definitely hungry! ;)

Hey Barbara,

Just catching up on my blog reading so I apologize. I don't eat or drink anything pre-workout since I do 6:15 AM. Maybe a sip of water from the water fountain. Due to a sensitive stomach that is only getting worse with age, I can't put much in there and keep it down so I just don't bother.

As for the coffee -- I'm LOVING this new world of flavor. It's almost like wine when it comes to identifying all the various flavors and quirks, right? For my home machine I've found the Eight O'Clock brand store bought brand to be the absolute BEST! It's not organic/free-trade, though.

This weekend Lisa and I are doing a Farmer's Market Lesson and hopefully I can find some good coffee there to share!

Good stuff people...

I have been working out in a fasted state for 3 years, it started with "body for life".

On weekends I get breaky in first before the gym since I get more sleepy time.

I'm learning a ton about coffee through this Paleo process:)

How does your body respond at weekends compared to other days?

if you do the majority of your stuff fasted, you would probably have a Metabolism, more conditioned to be like that, whether it best served you or not.

Altering that even once a week, would theoretically, stimulate some kind of alternative internal feelings mayhap.

This might in part, create a vision of how you view this scenario, based on a comparison of the two situations, fasted and not fasted.

Bear in mind of course, even if something doesn't become an issue, it may at least possibly theive benefit, leaving you doing something that creates a beneficial reaction, that is not as positive at it could otherwise perhaps be.

One possible analogy being overweight people, doing steady state cardio 3x a week, instead of something like interval, and wondering why they only lose 1lb of weight not 2.

Your decision in any given situation is yours alone. Not for me nor anyone, to neccessarily, persuade, coerse or influence you with,(no person or people being aimed at with that comment), except when there's clearly a detrimental outcome with one option.

Whatever you feel or want in this instance, good luck best wishes and no worries. Throughout every step you take, people will be hypothetically walking with you, so you know you can do it with a smile and a sense of self belief.

:-) :-).
